🚴 Cycling
Cycling is the best way to explore Rotto! With 22km of sealed cycle paths
and numerous trails, you can easily reach all corners of the island. Bike
hire is available at Thomson Bay.

Settlement to The Basin (Easy) - 4km return
Perfect for families, this flat route takes you to one of Rotto's best swimming spots.
Settlement to Wadjemup Lighthouse (Moderate) - 8km return
Some hills, but worth it for the panoramic views from the top.
Full Island Loop (Challenging) - 22km
Complete circuit of the island, passing most major attractions.
West End Route to Bathurst Lighthouse (Moderate) - 18km return
Spectacular coastal scenery and whale watching opportunities.
Bike Hire Information
Rates (2024):
Adult bikes: $35 per day
Children's bikes: $25 per day
Electric bikes: $65 per day
Bike trailers: $15 per day
Tip: Book your bike hire in advance during peak season (December-February).
Helmets are mandatory and included with all bike rentals.
🏊 Swimming & Snorkeling
With over 60 beaches and 20 bays, Rotto is a swimmer's paradise. The calm,
clear waters are perfect for snorkeling, with abundant marine life including
colorful fish, rays, and even friendly dolphins.

Little Salmon Bay - Excellent coral and fish
More variety of marine life, slightly deeper waters.
Parker Point - Popular with sea lions
Chance to swim with playful sea lions (keep respectful distance!).
Geordie Bay - Protected waters, great for beginners
Sheltered bay with calm conditions most days.

Pinky Beach - Soft sand, gentle waves, close to settlement
Thomson Bay - Main beach, patrolled in summer
Parakeet Bay - Secluded, beautiful, worth the bike ride

The waters around Rottnest feature numerous dive sites suitable for all

🏄 Surfing
Experienced surfers will find excellent breaks on Rotto's western side,
particularly at Strickland Bay. The exposed beaches offer consistent swells,
best during autumn and winter months.

Cathedral Rocks - Advanced surfers only
Important: Conditions can be dangerous. Only experienced
surfers should attempt western beaches. Always check surf reports and
weather conditions.
🎣 Fishing
Rottnest offers excellent fishing opportunities year-round. Both beach and
boat fishing are popular, with species including King George whiting,
snapper, and herring.

Important: All recreational fishing on Rottnest requires
a valid Western Australian recreational fishing license.
Check current bag limits before fishing
Some areas are marine sanctuary zones - no fishing allowed
The friendly quokkas are Rotto's most famous residents
Meeting the quokkas is a must-do Rottnest experience! These friendly marsupials
are found throughout the island and are known for their photogenic "smiles."
Quokka Etiquette:
DO NOT FEED the quokkas - It's illegal and harmful ($300 fine)
Keep respectful distance (0.5m minimum)
Never touch or pick up quokkas
Take photos from a distance - no flash

Whale Watching (June - September)
During migration season, humpback whales pass close to Rottnest. The best
viewing spots are along the western coastline, particularly near Bathurst
Lighthouse and West End.
Bird Watching
Over 100 bird species have been recorded on Rottnest. Bring binoculars to
spot ospreys, silver gulls, crested terns, and sacred kingfishers.
